The geiko Koiku, dressed in her Hassaku best: A black kimono and tortise shell hair ornaments. Hassaku, observed on the first of August, is a day to express thanks to those who have been helpful to you during the first half of the year. In Gion, all maiko and geiko visit the teahouses and teachers they have relationships with, dressed in their most formal kimono, to show their gratitude and ask for their favor in the future. As the mistress of one teahouse described it, "It's like new year's in the summer."
